Some of you will be aware that until recently, we were known as Volunteer Vancouver. The 67 year history of our organization is available in the "Who We Are" section of our website, and we would like to provide you with more details about why we decided to change our name.
Our organization has always evolved in order to keep pace and stay relevant. We are very proud of the Vancouver Volunteer Centre and Volunteer Vancouver’s name and reputation in the community. We created the Volunteer Vancouver brand in the early 1990's to reflect what we were at the time — a local organization focused on volunteers. Since then, the world has continued to change at an increasingly rapid pace, and so has our organization.
We have come to understand that the pool of willing, talented, passionate volunteers is extremely strong. As our knowledge of the sector has grown, we have realized that we can be most effective by working with not-for-profit leaders to build strong organizations that can effectively engage those volunteers. The name Volunteer Vancouver held us back from reaching some of the organizations that could benefit from our learning opportunities.
After much consideration, we officially decided to adopt a new name during the summer of 2009. To select the name, we conducted a thorough consultation with many of our key stakeholders. This included members, volunteers, and individuals from provincial and national groups. We invited and received over 100 new name suggestions, which we then reviewed and shortened to 5 possible options. This work was done by a volunteer selection team. From that short list, our staff and board team chose Vantage Point as our new name.
That is the story — in a nutshell. We remain focused on achieving our mission, and believe that this change will enable us to more effectively inspire and build leadership in the voluntary sector. The Vantage Point name accurately reflects our unique position in community, ongoing work, and continuing dedication to innovation and a focus on ALL people in not-for-profit organizations.
Volunteer Vancouver officially became
Vantage Point on March 25, 2010.
