Here’s our first post in a new Q&A blog series.  Huge thanks to everyone who responded.

One of the first emails we received was from Jennifer in Toronto, who asked:

“How can volunteers act as agents of innovation in not-for-profit organizations? And conversely, what practices can not-for-profit organizations adopt to allow innovation to happen?”

We love to see people connecting the dots between volunteers and innovation. Almost every week, talented people approach our organization looking to become involved. Just yesterday we connected with someone whose resume listed technical expertise...

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about life stages of not-for-profit organizations. In asking executive directors and board members to consider what “stage” their organization is at, we form a rich ground to consider their current context and contemplate how they can most successfully achieve their missions going forward.

In the same moments, I reflect on where Vantage Point is at in its own organization life cycle. Over a decade ago, Colleen Kelly, our recently retired Executive Director, worked with our board of directors at the time to ask – and answer – tough questions about our relevance...

When Norman Armour founded PuSh International Performing Arts Festival he created a list of good habits that he wanted to instill in the new organization.

In June this year, Norman joined Vantage Point and the City of Vancouver in sharing some of his experiences and wisdom with 150 not-for-profit leaders, including his list of good habits that his organization strives to live by. In the spirit of creating opportunities for leaders to share their knowledge with each other, we are publishing his full (unedited) list.

Good Habits: An Incomplete and Ongoing List

Recently, I noticed a new Tumblr feed making the rounds on Facebook, accompanied with lots of “LOL”s and demands to “Read. This. Now.”

Curious, I clicked on the link to discover this “When You Work at a Nonprofit" Tumblr feed highlighting some of the woes of working in the not-for-profit sector.

I have to admit, I found myself laughing. Some of the posts hit a little close to home. Feeling paralyzing fear about being the lead person on a fundraising campaign? Been there. Wolfing down food like a hyena as the last to eat at an event my organization is hosting? Absolutely.

There’s something...

Our series continues…

This week’s question comes from Joel in Calgary.  He asks, “Our managers and supervisors are already running as fast as they can. They can’t take on one more thing, and you’re talking about a complete cultural shift. How do we find the time?”

This may be the most common question we’re asked by people who are intrigued by the concept of an abundant not-for-profit.

Joel is right. Building a people lens culture isn’t an overnight process. In fact, it took us about ten years! (Though we didn’t know where we were going, so we hope we can save you a few years). Engaging and...

Our mission is expanding and so is our team (again!).

I am delighted to introduce Meaghan Huet as Vantage Point’s new Program Manager.

Meaghan will play a significant part in delivering two new province-wide collaborations. The first is a Provincial Training Initiative with The Divisions of Family Practice to equip employees and board members with the leadership skills and resources to effectively govern and manage 32 individual Divisions of Family Practice around BC.

The second collaboration is a Succession Management Practices Project with the tHRive Project. In this project, Meaghan will...

This workshop is targeted to board members who want to learn the basics of fundraising and how to develop a culture of fund development within their organization.
