I’ve been thinking a lot lately about life stages of not-for-profit organizations. In asking executive directors and board members to consider what “stage” their organization is at, we form a rich ground to consider their current context and contemplate how they can most successfully achieve their missions going forward.
In the same moments, I reflect on where Vantage Point is at in its own organization life cycle. Over a decade ago, Colleen Kelly, our recently retired Executive Director, worked with our board of directors at the time to ask – and answer – tough questions about our relevance in community as a “volunteer centre”. Recognizing the demographic drivers behind a shifting volunteer population, Vantage Point leaders re-imagined our potential for creating a future where every community mindfully engages passionate citizens.
This reinvention launched us into a new organizational life cycle. We were starting all over in many ways. A new mission and vision, a new audience, new programming, a different physical space, new team members and, ultimately, a new name.
Colleen spent subsequent years grounding Vantage Point in this new reality. Introducing a new “how” for not-for-profit organizations to achieve their missions, through effectively engaging the abundance of talent in community to create positive change in our communities.
With an incredibly strong team of knowledge philanthropists and salaried employees, I have had the privilege of working with the board to bridge the recent transition to our next organizational life stage –growth in our mission. With this shift, we are thrilled to have Denise Baker join our talent team next week as our new Executive Director.
With significant leadership experience as Assistant Dean of Sauder School of Business’ Career Centre and as Business Object’s Director, Worldwide Education Partnership, Denise is a strategic thinker with proven ability to move organizations forward. At this unique moment in our organizational life cycle, Denise will enter with relevant energy, expertise and skill to propel us forward.
