It's time to re-think how we approach the governance of our civil society organizations.
Inspired by our experience working with boards of not-for-profit organizations over the past 70 years - and the Reimagine Governance initiative of the Ontario Nonprofit Network1 - we are exploring what an alternative approach to how organizational governance could look. We want to hear from you.
What we've found so far:
The conventional model of a board of directors is not keeping pace withe the changing nature of our sector and its work.
Some of the most inspiring approaches to governance demonstrate a networked approach, a move away from centralized decision-making, and toward governance that better balances mission and values with regulatory compliance.
We have been holding monthly meetups with a group of governance experts to share new approaches and consider different models organizations currently experiment with. The group has come up with some catalyzing questions to drive the work going forward. If you are involved in not-for-profit governance in any way, and if the questions below resonate with you, please lend your voice!
