Director of Government Relations and Sector Development
Omar is our Director of Government Relations and Sector Development. What does this mean? He provides leadership in Vantage Point’s mission to build the capacity of BC’s not-for-profit sector through membership engagement, sector development, and government relations. Basically, Omar does a lot. Going back to the beginning, Omar completed his undergrad in International Business in Mexico before immigrating to Canada, at which point he started working in hospitality before transitioning to a role in AIDS Vancouver and Gayway (now HIM). He then completed a master’s in social planning and proceeded to focus on responsible investment issues with a specialty in university endowments. He has work experience with NEI Investments, Vancity Community Foundation, and co-founded Happy City – a consulting business which focuses on the relationship between urban design and well-being. Omar oversaw the growth of Happy City to a team of around 10 people with a global reach. He was later appointed by Vancouver City Council to the Planning Commission to advise the Mayor and Council on planning issues that affect the future of the City. After a long and winding journey Omar made his way to Vantage Point! He brings a broad perspective to his role, as well as a network of relationships from community-building in different sectors. He also understands economic, social, and environmental issues, and their intersectionality. On a personal level, Omar is passionate about equity, community, environmental sustainability, and justice (he mentions the last one with firm certainty). Outside work you might find him at the gym, cycling, singing in his choir, or spending time with his FIVE roommates (and one infant)! Ask Omar about his interest in music, community well-being, or responsible investment issues.
